The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) was set up by some visionary businesses in the bicycle industry to enable the sector to play an active role in the promotion of cycling and to work with Governments to make Australia more bicycle-friendly.

Coast to Coast for Canines

ImageImagine cycling 1038km around Tasmania over seven days for a dog. Well that’s exactly what the participants in the 2009 Coast to Coast for Canines cycling challenge will be doing from January 23 to 29 in 2009. The challenge is being held to raise funds for the Guide Dogs Tasmania. Starting and finishing in Hobart, nine riders will attempt the epic ride passing through some of Tasmania’s most challenging and stunning landscapes.

The challenge has been spearheaded by 22 year old teacher Michael Smith and Andras Nagy, a 25 year old engineer, who both participate actively in Tasmanian and interstate road bike racing.

“As avid cyclists we have always considered riding around our beautiful state Tasmania. The 2009 ‘Coast to Coast for Canines’ charity ride, allows us to combine both the elements of a physically and mentally demanding challenge with an opportunity to raise funds for the Guide Dogs Tasmania (GDT),” say Smith and Nagy.  The group will consist of a number of cyclists, support crew and vehicles with fifteen personnel actively involved throughout the event coming from a variety of backgrounds including builders, scientists, musicians and students. The riders will attempt to cover as much distance as possible during each stage of the event. Smith and Nagy say they intend to begin riding from the GDT Head Office in Hobart and journey through the West Coast, North West Coast, North, and North East before finishing in Hobart via the East Coast.

At Body Torque we think this is a pretty worthy cause and love that these cyclists are using their love of the sport to help somebody in need. We decided to help them out with some sponsorship and we’d like to challenge you to consider helping out too. It costs approximately $25,000 to raise, train and maintain each guide dog throughout its working life. Guide Dogs Tasmania has on average eighteen puppies in training, seven dogs in Guide Dog training and twenty-four working dogs in the state. Because there is no government funding for the program Guide Dogs Tasmania rely heavily on support from donors and sponsors.
