Sydney Morning Herald Poll on bicycle registration - Sadly the issue of registrations for bicycle riders is gaining a momentum again at a time where Governments around Australia are faced with the issues of climate change, congestion in our cities and growing health burden of physical inactive people.
We believe that Governments should provide incentives to encourage behaviour which addresses those challenges rather than putting a cost on those activities. A levy would cost a lot to administer and would never raise enough revenue to make our communities more cycle friendly which not only benefits bicycle riders but the whole community.According to a research study the CPF is undertaking for the Department of Health and Ageing the current level of cycling in Australia saves the Government $82.9 million health savings from recreational cycling $71.2 million health savings from commuting cycling based on the 2006 census$9.2 million savings on greenhouse gas emission reductions$63.9 million savings on reduced congestion in capital cities SMH has an online poll and we encourage you to make your voice heard. http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/cyclists-should-pay-says-mp/2008/02/07/1202234066487.html It is vital that the cycling sector is consistent its message. The current level of cycling in Australia saves Government in excess of $100 million and at the time Governments are faced with issues of climate change, congestion in our cities and growing health burden of physical inactivity, we need incentives to get more people to reduce their environmental impact and lead healthier lifestyles.
